If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether to book a mini session or a full session… you’re not alone.
It’s one of the most common questions I get—and honestly, the answer isn’t as simple as “short vs long.”
Because the truth is, it’s not really about the time. It’s about your kids, your family dynamic, and how you want your session to feel.
Let me show you what I mean.

What’s the Difference Between Mini and Full Sessions?
Before we dive in, here’s a quick breakdown:
Mini Sessions
Mini sessions are:
Short (typically around 15 minutes)
Held on specific dates and locations
Perfect for quick updates or seasonal photos
Full Sessions
Full sessions are:
45–60 minutes (or more)
Flexible and relaxed
Designed for connection, movement, and variety
Both are beautiful options, but they serve very different families.
A Real Family Example (Why This Matters More Than You Think)
I recently photographed a family with two young boys during a fall outdoor session.
Right away, I could see their personalities shining through.
One brother needed time. He stayed close to mom at first, quietly taking everything in, not quite ready to jump in front of the camera.
The other? He was on the move from the very beginning: running, exploring, climbing, full of energy.

And this is exactly where the session type matters.
Because within the first few minutes, it was clear: This session wasn’t going to be about standing still and smiling.
It was going to be about connection, movement, and letting them be exactly who they are.
Why a Mini Session Wouldn’t Have Worked for This Family
Some Kids Need Time to Warm Up
That slower-to-warm brother? By the middle of the session, he was smiling, cuddling in, and fully himself.
But he needed that space first.
A mini session wouldn’t have given him that.

Movement Isn’t a Problem (If You Have Time)
The other brother didn’t need to “settle down.”He needed to move.
And because we had time, we turned that energy into:
giggles
games
natural, joy-filled moments

Time Pressure Changes Everything
In a shorter session, there’s often an unspoken pressure:“Hurry, smile, look here.”
And kids feel that.
With more time, everything softens. We follow their lead instead of rushing them.
When a Mini Session Is the Perfect Fit
Mini sessions can be amazing—when they match your family.
They tend to work best when:
Your Kids Warm Up Quickly
They’re comfortable right away and don’t need much time to adjust.
You’ve Done Photos Before
They know the rhythm, the prompts, and what to expect.
You Want a Few Beautiful Updates
You don’t need a full gallery, just a handful of meaningful images.
How to Choose the Right Session for Your Family
If you’re unsure, here’s a simple way to think about it:
A full session might be best for you if:
your child is shy or slow to warm
your kids love to move and explore
you want a relaxed, playful experience

A mini session might be perfect if:
your kids are quick to engage
you’ve done photos before
you’re looking for something short and simple
What Most Parents Don’t Realize Before Booking
It’s not about having “well-behaved” kids.
It’s about giving them the space to be themselves.
And that’s where I come in.
I’ll guide you the entire time with simple prompts and direction.Your job?
To hug, kiss, snuggle, tickle, and play with your kids. To look at them, then back at me, and just be together.
I’ll take care of the rest.

What to Expect During Your Session With Me
No stiff posing. No pressure to perform.
Just gentle guidance, movement, and real connection.
The moments you’ll end up loving most are usually the in-between ones:
the laughs
the cuddles
the chaos that somehow feels like home
Final Thoughts: It’s Not About the Session Type - It’s About Your Family
There’s no “better” option between a mini session and a full session.
Only what works best for you.
The goal is always the same:Photos that feel like your family, exactly as you are in this season.
