As a Toronto High Park photographer, I love capturing families in one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces. When this sweet family booked me for a fall session, I knew we’d have the perfect backdrop — towering trees, winding trails, and plenty of room for little ones to explore. What I didn’t know yet was just how much heart, patience, and creativity would go into turning shy glances into full-blown giggles.

Sometimes they're nervous - and don't worry - IT'S GOING TO BE OK :)

Their toddler was understandably a little shy when we first met. New face, a camera, and a people asking something of them can feel overwhelming for little ones — and that’s completely normal! In fact, I’ve worked with many families across High Park, The Junction, Bloor West Village, and Roncesvalles who have a toddler that’s not sure about the camera at first. The good news? There are so many ways to gently encourage them, without forcing smiles.

Making the Photoshoot Fun for Toddlers

During this High Park family session, we tried a variety of approaches to help him feel comfortable:

  • Bringing comfort items – his favourite toy joined us for a few frames.

  • Play breaks – time to read a book together or wander down the leafy paths.

  • Snack time – because happy tummies make happy smiles.

  • Games and movement – a round of tickles and even a little music for dancing.

Bit by bit, those shy expressions turned into genuine laughter. By the end, we had a full gallery filled with sweet snuggles, big smiles, and moments this family will cherish forever.

Why a High Park Family Photoshoot Is Perfect for West-End Toronto Families

As a Toronto family photographer based near High Park, I love this location for its variety. From open grassy spaces to woodsy trails, every corner offers a new backdrop. Whether your family loves the vibrant fall colours, the cherry blossoms in spring, or the soft greens of summer, High Park is always photogenic.

It’s also a short trip for families in The Junction, Bloor West Village, and Roncesvalles, making it an easy and familiar spot for kids — which often helps them relax for the camera.

Your Toddler Doesn’t Have to “Perform” for Great Photos

If you’re a parent worried about how your toddler will behave during a photoshoot, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to be! My goal is always to capture the real, unposed moments that tell your family’s story. Sometimes that means big belly laughs, and other times it’s the quiet cuddles that mean the most.

If you’re ready to book your own High Park family photoshoot (or a session in The Junction, Bloor West Village, or Roncesvalles), I’d love to help you create memories that feel authentic and joyful.
